NASA released video exposure robot RoboSimian due to lithium battery fire explosion

A video released by NASA recently showed that in June of this year, RoboSimian, a new robot developed by it, suddenly caught fire and exploded during the charging of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Fortunately, no casualties were caused.

As can be seen from the video, this four-legged, scorpion-shaped robot suddenly exploded in a fire without any abnormality. At that time, the staff went to lunch. The intern first discovered the fire, climbed in from the laboratory window, sprayed the robot with a CO2 fire extinguisher, and used water to pour the fire, even though this operation did not meet NASA's safety regulations.

Then, another intern called the fire department, and the firefighters wore professional protective clothing into the lab, which eventually extinguished the fire.

So, why does the RoboSimian robot explode? The NASA report pointed out that the robot's battery unit is damaged, causing a voltage or current overflow short circuit. Since the battery pack of the RoboSimian robot is more complicated (with 96 batteries), some small deviations may cause accidents.
