The reporter learned at the delivery site that the "Exploration No. 1" ship has a full displacement of 6250T, a length of 94.45M and a width of 17.9M. According to the tasks of the National 863 Program, “Exploration No.1” will become the first fully self-made 4,500-meter deep-sea submersible support mother ship in China. The next step will be to support the sea test of China’s 10,000-meter manned and unmanned submersibles. And deep dive work. According to Owen Guang, the project manager, as the deep sea submersible mother ship, “Exploration No. 1” has the characteristics of strong endurance, more than 10,000 nautical miles and self-sustaining power of more than 60 days. Secondly, the ship has an internationally advanced DP2 dynamic positioning system that can achieve full sea operation. In addition, the curved design of the bow will fully wrap the hull and resist strong winds and waves at high speeds. Most importantly, the A-frame is attached to the stern, and the A-frame can be used to place the submersible into the deep sea. Connected between the submersible workshop and the A-frame are two long straight tracks with winches for transporting the manned submersible.

In addition to the working mother ship and work test platform as a deep submersible, "Exploration No. 1" also has sufficient deep-sea scientific research capabilities, including geological laboratories, geophysical laboratories, chemical laboratories, biological laboratories, and frozen samples. More than a dozen laboratories, including the library, and two detachable mobile laboratories on the deck, can carry 60 crew members, scientists and submarines.

Due to the long operating hours of the original ship and the small space of the hull, many technical and management problems, such as multi-professional cross-operation, narrow construction space, new and old sections and equipment hardware and software integration, are designed and supervised by the design and construction unit. With the concerted efforts, the performance of the ship after the transformation has been greatly improved. The technical parameters and indicators have reached or exceeded the original design requirements, and the project transformation has achieved the expected goals. In addition, all the ship's retrofit design takes into account the factors of green, environmental protection and energy saving, and by optimizing the hull structure, it effectively reduces the vibration and noise of each laboratory and creates a good working and living environment for scientists.
