ABB Receives $50 Million High Voltage DC Project Order

Zurich, Switzerland, September 25, 2012 – ABB, the world's leading power and automation technology group, has won a $50 million order from the Caola Bassa hydropower station in Mozambique to renovate the Songo High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station.
The clean water and electricity of the Caola Bassa hydropower station in Mozambique is transported to South Africa, which is dominated by coal thermal power, through a 1,417-kilometer high-voltage direct-current transmission line with a capacity of 1,920 megawatts. The converter station and supporting high-voltage equipment are the core equipment on this transmission line. Retrofit projects refer to updates to critical equipment, including converter transformers and DC smoothing reactors. Through the transformation, the power supply capacity of the line can be improved, the stability of the power system can be improved, and the Caola Bassa hydropower station can be successfully completed with the power purchase agreement of Eskom, a major power company in South Africa. Renewable energy exports to South Africa have always been an important source of income for Mozambique.
As part of the turnkey project, ABB will also supply and install lightning arresters and measuring equipment. The entire project will be completed in two phases, the DC equipment segment is expected to be completed in 2013, and the transformer equipment segment will be completed in 2014.
