The density, kinematic viscosity, aniline point, and refractive index of rubber oils are four important physical constants used to detect and characterize quality and purity. In the study of rubber oils, it was found that the molecular structure of rubber oils is different, and their refractive index sizes are also different. The refractive index measured for a certain rubber oil component is generally referred to as the refractive index of the component. The relationship between the refractive index and the composition of the rubber oil is: the refractive index of the alkane is the smallest, the refractive index of the aromatic hydrocarbon is the highest, and the content of the naphthenes is between the two. At the same time, the refractive index of the rubber oil is also related to the relative molecular mass of the oil. The larger the relative molecular mass, the greater the refractive index. If the same is a paraffin-based rubber oil, the refractive index of the small relative molecular mass is smaller than that of the large phase relative molecular mass. Therefore, for different types of rubber oils, comparisons with each other only make sense if their relative molecular masses are approximately the same.

The determination of the refractive index of rubber oil is mainly based on the method specified in Chinese Petroleum and Petrochemical Industry Standard SH/T 0724-2002 "Determination of refractive index and chromaticity dispersion of liquid hydrocarbons," which is based on the American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM D1218-99.
