A recent study by the British Museum of Nature found that bees have strong static electricity on their bodies and wings, so they can absorb a variety of tiny environmental pollution particles. Using this discovery, scientists began using bees to detect air pollution.
Conventional air quality observatories can only observe the amount of particulates in the air in the vicinity. In contrast, a bee can fly about 2,500 meters around the beehive every day. In other words, air quality observers can obtain data on the types of pollutants within a radius of 2,500 meters by observing the particles attached to the bees. Having identified the types of pollutants in the air, scientists can start with the pollutants and further narrow down the possible sources of pollution.
