In the mid-1980s, China was transformed from a planned economy to a market economy. Shaanxi Auto, like all military-industrial enterprises, was facing the turbulence brought about by the transition from military to civilian. In 1990, the current Chairman Zhang Yupu took office and actively introduced advanced technology to carry out institutional reforms. In a short period of 2 years, Shaanxi Automobile turned losses into profits. Today, Shaanxi Steam, which has gone through three startups, has become the vanguard of Shaanxi's equipment manufacturing industry, a top 500 Chinese company, and a top 500 Chinese machinery company. Shaanxi Auto has been transformed from the industry's follower to the leader and gradually developed into a well-known commercial vehicle base both at home and abroad. In 2007 alone, the production and sales of heavy-duty trucks of the Shaanxi Automobile Group both exceeded 60,000 vehicles and the production value reached 18 billion yuan.

Shaanxi Automobile is currently accelerating the construction of new bases in the northern suburbs of Xi’an, special vehicle bases in the eastern suburbs, Caijiapo parts base, and Baoji mid-tonnage truck base. Heavy trucks are mainly used to develop all types of heavy, medium, light and micro commercial vehicles. The scale of production of 120,000 heavy trucks, 5,000 large and medium-sized passenger vehicles, 100,000 centrally-operated cards and special-purpose vehicles, and 100,000 light passenger and cargo vehicles were formed, and the development of key general and general parts and components was promoted.

In 2008, on the occasion of its 40th birthday, Shaanxi Automobile blew the 4th entrepreneurial troop number again. By 2010, sales revenue will reach 30 billion yuan. The total automobile production and sales volume will enter the top 15 in the country and sales revenue will enter. Top 10 in the country. By 2012, sales revenue will reach 50 billion yuan. Shaanxi Auto will be established as an international large-scale enterprise group to make greater contribution to the development of Shaanxi's economy and make greater contributions to the Chinese auto industry.
